Documents Required For Number Plates
We need two main documents to issue road legal plates: proof of identity and proof of entitlement.
Proof of identity includes:
- A driving licence
- Bank or building society statement from the last 6 months
- Current utility or tax bill from the last 6 months
- Passport
Your proof of identity needs to show your full name and address.
Proof of entitlement includes:
- V5 - your Vehicle Registration Certificate.
- V778 - a Cherished Transfer Retention Certificate.
- V750 - a Certificate of entitlement to a mark.
- V948 - an Authorisation Certificate from the DVLA Local Office.
- V11- Vehicle Licence Renewal.
These are legal guidelines from the DVLA, and without providing these, we won’t be able to provide a replacement or new number plate that is fully road legal.

Documents
Need help with your document checks?
Which documents do I need?
- Your driving license - simply upload a JPEG or PNG (most images will save in this format)
- Entitlement Document - your V5, V778, V750, V948 or V11
Why do I need to submit my documents?
It's our responsibility at Chase Lane Plates to make sure that any road plates we supply to you meet all legal requirements for use on public roads in the UK. This means being fully compliant with BS AU 145e standards, and to do so we need to check a couple of documents from you. Better safe than sorry!
How do I submit my documents?
We will always try to make this process as easy as possible for you. Once you have found your custom plate, before adding it to cart, you will see 2 boxes prompting you to upload an Entitlement Document and a Driving License. You simply need to click 'Choose File', and select the pictures or scans of your documents from your files.
Do I need to submit documents for Show Plates?
No, you don't need to provide documents for Show Plates as they would not be used on public roads. For this reason, you will notice that we do not include the section prompting you to submit documents before adding to cart for these products.
What if I want to buy a plate as a gift?
That's absolutely fine - it's not a problem if the name on the ID submitted doesn't match the entitlement document in this case. Simply upload your own driver's license as proof of ID, and the entitlement doc of the car the plates will be used on.
What do entitlement documents look like?
V5

New Keeper Slip
This is a green slip that is torn off the bottom of a V5 when a car is sold to a new owner. We've attached an image below.
V778

V750

When To Replace Your Number Plate
There are several reasons why you might need or want to replace your number plate:
- Damage - if you’re in an accident or your number plate is scratched, broken, or damaged, you’ll need to replace it to ensure it is clearly readable.
- Rusting - If your car has pressed metal number plates that are starting to rust, it’s essential to replace them to ensure the rust doesn’t obscure the numbers or cause the plate to fall off.
- If your plates are stolen - Thieves can steal number plates to clone them, leading to fines and wrongful arrests. If your number plates are stolen, report this to the police, and make sure you get replacement number plates to keep your car road legal.
- Aesthetics - Standard acrylic number plates are functional, but more and more people are opting for sharper, more defined lettering to level up their cars.
Replacement Number Plates
Number plates are legally required to be in good condition and clear enough to easily read. If your plates are cracked, faded, or have marks obscuring any characters, you’ll need replacement plates.
Once you submit the documents required for number plates, it’s time to pick your design. Our high-quality acrylic number plates offer exceptional durability combined with aesthetics, with our 3D Gel and 4D Acrylic styles adding depth and style to letters and numbers while remaining BS AU 145e compliant.
Show Plates
Here at Chase Lane Plates, we offer a wide range of show number plates in multiple styles and finishes. Unlike road legal number plates, we don’t need to see any identification or proof of ownership with our show plates, as they won’t be used on public roads.
Show plates can say anything you like and be on any style of plate that you like. Any of our number plates can be show plates, including our classic car plates, which make ideal gifts or displays.
