Classic Number Plates FAQs

Are Classic Car Plates Road Legal?

Yes, classic car plates are road legal in the UK - however, there are some specific rules in place to be aware of. To use vintage black and silver number plates, a car must be registered before January 1 1980.

You must also register your vehicle as a historical vehicle with the DVLA to ensure your classic car plates are road legal.

What Types Of Cars Can Use Classic Number Plates?

Only cars that were built before January 1 1980 can legally use classic number plates on the road. Even if a car is old enough to use vintage number plates, it needs to be registered as a historic vehicle with the DVLA.

If your vehicle meets these requirements, you can legally use black and silver number plates.

Are There Different Types Of Black And Silver Classic Number Plates?

Yes - here at Chase Lane Plates, we offer several styles of classic car plates to suit many types of vintage vehicles. Our classic plates come in a wide range of sizes, including 420mm x 111mm 6-digit plates, 12 x 16 American Import, and 7x5 inches to name a few. Plus, we provide curved mudguard plates as well as custom pressed Japanese import plates for classic cars.

What Are The Standard Sizes For Classic License Plates?

The standard size for classic license plates is approximately 520mm x 110mm. However, classic number plates can vary in size depending on the type of car you want the plate for. For example, our pressed Japanese import plate is 13 x 6 inches, and Land Rover style square number plates are 11 x 8 inches.

Do You Pre-drill Classic Number Plates?

No, we don’t pre-drill any of our number plates. We understand that each vehicle has varying spacing for screw holes, so we allow you to drill where is best for you without any pre-drilled holes getting in the way.

What Documents Do I Need To Order Classic Car Plates?

To order classic number plates from us, all you need is your driving license (a picture will do), and your entitlement document. This ensures any plates we manufacture for you are fully road legal and compliant with BS AU 145e standards. Do You Provide Show Plates?

Yes, we provide show plates for classic cars, custom vehicles, and display purposes alongside our fully road-legal number plates. Show plates are ideal for car shows, exhibitions, and private display, and can feature custom spacing, colours, slogans, or logos that wouldn’t meet DVLA road-legal requirements. Please note that show plates are not legal for road use and should only be used off-road or at events.
