Old style number plates replicate the look of pre-2001 registration formats. Before the current system was introduced in September 2001, vehicles used a different letter-prefix or suffix system, and the plate typography had a distinct character to it. Any plate pre-dating the 2001 registration system will have a distinctly different look to modern plates, and replicating that accurately takes the right materials and the right fonts.

Key Features of Classic Car Number Plates

Classic car number plates typically feature pressed or painted metal construction rather than reflective acrylic, the Charles Wright font (with pre-1980 vehicles sometimes using an older serif style), and a white or silver front plate paired with a yellow rear plate. For vehicles registered before 1 January 1980, no reflective backing material is required.

What BS AU 145e Means for Your Plates

BS AU 145e is the British Standard that governs the construction, materials, and character specifications of all road legal number plates in the UK. If a plate does not meet BS AU 145e, it is not road legal, regardless of how it looks.

Registered Supplier Requirements

As of 1st January 2003, new regulations require that number plates can only be supplied by registered suppliers who must record registration details and verify identity and entitlement documents. What Makes a Good Old Style Number Plate for a Classic Car?

You may be asking: what should I actually look for when buying the right plates for my classic? From years of making plates for owners across the UK, here's what we've found matters most.

1. Material

Material is where a lot of suppliers cut corners, and it's the first thing a trained eye will notice. Pressed aluminium and pressed steel plates are the most authentic choice for pre-1970s vehicles. They replicate the look and feel of original plates far better than modern acrylic alternatives, and they age in a way that suits a classic vehicle rather than looking out of place on it.

2. Font Accuracy

Plates made between 1970 and 2001 typically used 1 and 7/8 inch digits, sometimes referred to as 1 8 inch digits, rather than the larger characters used on modern plates. For pre-1980 vehicles, a serif-style font may be more appropriate depending on the registration.

3. Plate Size and Format

Standard sizes vary depending on the registration format and the vehicle type. A typical oblong plate runs 12 x 7 inches or 12 x 8 inches, though some older vehicles and certain registration formats called for square plates or smaller formats.

4. Compliance

These use silver digits on a black background and are permitted for pre-1980 historic vehicles used on the road, provided the vehicle was manufactured before that date and is registered in the DVLA’s Historic Tax Class. They carry a strong period look and are a favourite among concours and show vehicle owners who want to lean into the visual heritage of their car.

Vehicles older than 40 years and registered as 'historic vehicles' with the DVLA receive tax and MOT exemption benefits.
